Genus: Fernatator MASSARE, EDMUNDS, MORRIS, POULTON, PAN & MALLON, 2025
Etymology: In reference to both the town of Fernie and Fernie Formation, where the specimen was found and Latin, natator, "swimmer"; which means rigid swimmer.

Species: prenticei MASSARE, EDMUNDS, MORRIS, POULTON, PAN & MALLON, 2025
Etymology: In honor of Tom Prentice, who found the specimen in 1916.

Holotype: CMNFV 40398

Locality: East bank of the Elk River, 1.6 km north of Morrissey bridge and 11.9 km south of Fernie, British Columbia Province, Canada.

Horizon: Fernie Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Ibex Zone.

Age: Lower Pliensbachian Stage, Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.

Material: Fragmentary skull, left coracoid, partial left humerus, vertebrae and ribs.
