Genus: Magnipterygius MAISCH & MATZKE, 2022
Etymology: After the dwarven king "Magni Bronzebeard" of the fictional Warcraft Universe, referring to the unusually small size of the taxon.
Species: huenei MAISCH & MATZKE, 2022
Etymology: I honor of Prof. Dr. Freidrich Freiherr von Huene (1875-1969), in honour of his decades of extensive and detailed studies on the Posidonienscheifer ichthyosaurs.
Holotype: SMNS 96922
Locality: Abandoned cement quarry of the Holcim, Süddeutschland, GmbH, Dotternhausen, Zollernalbkreis, Baden-Württemberg State, SW Germany.
Horizon: Lower Posidonienschiefer Formation, Lias epsilon II, 4.
Biostratigraphy: Below siemensi-Venet, Middle Antiquum Horizon, semicelatum Subzone, teuicostatum Zone.
Age: Lower Toarcian Stage, Upper Lias Epoch, Early Jurassic.
Material: Complete skull and skeleton.
