Etymology: Greek, omphalos, “navel”, and Greek, sauros, “lizard”: Navel (tooth) lizard.

Etymology: In reference to the state of Nevada, where the specimen was found.

Holotype: UCMP 8121

Locality: South fork of American Canyon, Humboldt County, Pershing County, Nevada.

Horizon: Cymbospondylus beds.

Etymology: In honor of Prof. Dr. John C. Merriam of the University of Berkeley, one of the most important ichthyosaur researchers of all time, who also was the first ot recognized the omphalosaurid nature of the material in question.
