Etymology: Greek, pessos, “round stone game-piece for playing draughts or checkers” and Greek, pteryx, “wing, fin”: Game-piece fin (Damsteinflosse).

Etymology: In honor of John C. Merriam, for his outstanding contributions to the undrstanding and knowledge of Ichthyosaurs, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."
