Etymology: In honor of paleontologist Robert M. Appleby, for his contributions to the study of ichthyosaurs. He first recognized the unique forefin structure of Protoichthyosaurus adn erected the genus.

Holotype: UNM.G.2017.1 (previously, UON FR159, UON TC3199)
