Etymology: Greek, sveltos, "agile or nimble" and Greek, nektes, "swimmer"; to account for the small size, streamlined skull and inferred powerful girdle musculature of this ichthyosaur.

Species: insolitus FISCHER, MASURE, ARKHANGELKY & GODEFROIT, 2011
Etymology: Latin, insolitus, "unusual"; in reference to the numerous unusual features of htis ichthyosaur, as well as its general bauplan and tooth morphology.

Locality: Ul'yanovsk region, western European Russia.
