Etymology: Greek, sveltos, "agile or nimble" and Greek, nektes, "swimmer"; to account for the small size, streamlined skull and inferred powerful girdle musculature of this ichthyosaur.
Species: insolitus FISCHER, MASURE, ARKHANGELKY & GODEFROIT,
Etymology: Latin, insolitus, "unusual"; in reference to the numerous unusual features of htis ichthyosaur, as well as its general bauplan and tooth morphology.
Holotype: IRSNB R269
Locality: Ul'yanovsk region, western European Russia.
Age: Upper Barremian Stage, Lower Gallic Subepoch, Middle Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.
Material: A nearly complete skull and skeleton.
