Genus: Wimanius MAISCH & MATZKE, 1998
Etymology: In honor of Prof. Dr. Carl Wiman (1867-1944) of the University of Uppsala (Sweden), for his excellent contributions to palaeoherpetology, particularly on Triassic ichthyosaurs.

Species: odontopalatus MAISCH & MATZKE, 1998
Etymology: Greek, odous, “tooth” and Latin, palatum, “palate”; chosen for the unusual condition of a toothed palatine.

Holotype: GPIT 1797

Locality: Monte San Giorgio, Tessin Canton, Switzerland.

Horizon: Besano Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Grenzbitumenzone.

Age: Anisian/Ladinian Stage boundary, Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: Fragmentary skull.
