Genus: Balanerpeton MILNER & SEQUIERA, 1994
Etymology: Greek, balaneion, "a hot-spring or bath" and Greek, herpeton, "a creeping animal"; elided together in the interest of a more euphonious name.

Species: woodi MILNER & SEQUIERA, 1994
Etymology: In honor of Stan Wood who discovered the East Kirkton locality and collected much of the material.

Holotype: GLAHM V2051 (previously SPW 2272)

Locality: East Kirkton Quarry, Bathgate, west-Lothian Province, Scotland, northern United Kingdom.

Horizon: East Kirkton Limestone, West Lothian Oil-Shale Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle Dinantian Series, Upper Visean Epoch, Late Carboniferous (Middle Mississippian).

Material: A complete skull and anterior axial skeleton in ventral aspect on a slab of black shale.
