Etymology: Greek, bathys, "deep" and Greek, gnathos, "jaw"; in reference to
the exceptionally deep jaw of brachyopids which results from the downturned quadrate
rami of the pterygoids.

Age: Spathian Stage, uppermost Scythian Epoch to Anisian Stage, lowermost Mid Triassic Epoch, Early to Middle Triassic.

Etymology: Greek, poikilos, "mottled" and Greek, opis, "face"; in refrence to
the mottled coloured preservation of the bone of the skull and roof.
Holotype: BP/1/5790
Locality: Farm Driefontein, Paul Roux District, north-eastern Free State Province, South Africa.
Burgersdorp Formation, Upper Beaufort Group, Tarkastad Subgroup.
Biostratigraphy: Lower Cynognathus zone.
Age: Spathian Stage, uppermost Scythian Epoch to Anisian Stage, lowermost Mid Triassic Epoch, Early to Middle Triassic.
Material: Partial skull roof and part of the occiput.
