Etymology: Greek, magna, "great." The name refers to the large size of the type skull relative to
most other lydekkerinids.
Holotype: BP/1/5079
Locality: Fairydale farm, Bethulie, Free (Orange Free) State, South Africa.
Horizon: Katberg Formation, Beaufort Group.
Biostratigraphy: Lower Lystrosaurus Assemblage zone.
Age: Early Scythian Epoch, Early Triassic.
Material: Almost complete skull without lower jaw.
