Genus: Parapytanga STRAPASSON, PINHEIRO & SOARES, 2015
Etymology: From the Tupi language (spoken by the indigenous Tupi tribes, native to the Brazilian coast) parapytanga, red river, reflecting the red colour of the fossil rock matrix, which was formed in a fluviallacustrine environment of the Rio do Rasto Formation.

Species: catariensis STRAPASSON, PINHEIRO & SOARES, 2015
Etymology: In reference to Santa Catarina State, Brazil, where the fossil was found.

Holotype: UFRGS-PV-0355-P

Locality: Serra do Espigao, Santa Catarina State, Brazil, between monte Castelo and Santa Cecilia municipalities (UTM 22J567876.5/7040838.5).

Horizon: Morro Pelado Member, Rio do Rasto Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle-Late Permian.

Material: An incomplete skeleton composed of the orbital region of the skull roof, teh basicranium, some endocranial element,s a left stapes, adn a right hemimandible, vertebrae, ribs, bones from teh pectoral girdle, a right femur and a cluster of scales.
