Etymology: isiXhosa, uMzantsi, "south" (also "South Africa"); refering to its place of origin.

Species: amazana GEES & ALHBERG, 2018
Etymology: isiXhosa, amazana, "water ripples"; referring to its distinctive dermal ornament.

Holotype: AM 7528

Locality: Waterloo Farm, 'Upper Fish Lens', near Makhanda (=Grahamstown), Sarah Baartman District, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Uppermost part of the Witpoort Formation, Witteberg Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Famennian Stage, Late Devonian Epoch, Late Devonian.

Material: A right cleithrum, left jugal, right preopercular, left frontal, one-ear complete and two partial infradentaires, a probable supratempoarl, and some unidentified elements.

Referred material:

AM 7529: A near-complete left jaw ramus and parts of the associated right ramus.
