Etymology:
Holotype: BMNH R4563
Locality: Joggins, Chignecto Bay, several miles of sea coast on the Bay of Fundy, Cumberland County, Nova Scotia Province, Canada.
Horizon: Joggins Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Westephalian B, upper Westphalian, Middle Silesian series, Kashirskian Stage, Moscovian Epoch, Late Pennsylvanian (Late Carboniferous).
Material: Skull roof and lower jaw, together with very poorly preserved post cranial remains.
Paratypes:
RM 12003: Palatine tooth plate, vertebra and humerus.
RM 2.1130: Lower jaw and humerus, figured by Moodie 1916, palate 7, as Hylerpeton.
RM 2.1184: Humerus.

Locality: UALP 7205, Swisshel Mountains, Cochise County, Arizona.
Horizon: Black Prince Limestone, one meter below contact with overlying Pennsylvanian Horquilla limestone.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Late Morrowan or earliest Derryan (equivalent to Langsettian – Duckmantia boundary), Westephalian, lower upper Silesian, upper Bashkrian or lower Moscovian Epoch, early Pennsylvanian (Late Carboniferous).
Material: Left mandible.
