Etymolgoy: Greek, aps, "backwards" and Greek, gnathos, "jaw"; in reference to the posteriorly increasing height of the subdental lamina of the dentry.

Species: triptodon NYDAM, ROWE & CIFELLI, 2013
Etymology: Greek, triptos, "rubbed" and Greek, odous, "tooth"; in reference to the heavily worn teeth.

Holotype: TMM 43057-264

Locality: Terlingual local fauna, OMNH V58/TMM 43057, lies 8 km NNE of Study Butte, Brewster County, Texas.

Horizon: Aguja Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Judithian Age, Campanian Stage, Senonian subepoch, Upper Gulf epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Partial left dentary.

OMNH 25347: Partial left maxilla.

Horizon: Middle of the lower Shale Member, Aguja Formation.

Age: Early Campanian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material:

TMM 45947-540: ?left maxilla fragment with teeth.
