Etymology: Malagsay, konka, "very old" and Greek, sauros, "lizard": Very old lizard.

Species: mahalana KRAUSE, EVANS & GAO, 2003
Etymology: Malagsay, mahalana, "scarce": in reference ot the rarity of lizards in this assemblage.

Holotype: UA 8715

Locality: MAD93-33, Berivotra field study area, Mahanjanga Province, Madagascar.

Horizon: Anembalemba Member, Maevarano Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Maastrichtian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Upper Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Nearly complete left lower jaw including articular, prearticular, surangular, and dentary preserving at least 19 tooth positions, partial left clavicle, left ilium, left and right ischia, ribs, possible sacral and trunk vertebrae, an anterior caudal vertebra and at least 4 posterior caudal vertebrae, scattered manual and pedal elementsand numerous (more than 400) osteoderms.
