Etymology: Greek, stypos, "stypmpy," Greek, odontos, "tooh" and Greek, sauros, "lizard" ( masculine), meaning “stypmpy-toothed lizard,” in reference to the short and stout teeth of this lizard.

Species: melletes GAO & FOX, 1996
Etymology: Greek (masculine), melletes, “delayer,” in reference to its delayed recovery in 1991 from the scree-washed concentrate collected in the 1960s.

Holotype: UALVP 19844

Locality: KUA-1 locality, Red Deer River Valley near the village of Scollard, Stettler County, central Alberta Province, Canada.

Horizon: Scollard Formation, Uppermost Edmonton Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Lancian Age, uppermost Maastrichtian Stage, uppermost Senonian subepoch, Upper Upper Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: A nearly complete right dentary.
