Genus: Zhangolestes ZAN, WOOD, ROUGIER, JIN, CHEN & SCHAFF, 2006
Etymology: In honor of Mr. Zhang Pulin, who discovered the specimens described
and several vertebrate-rich localities in Quantou Formation, along the eastern
margin of the Songliao Basin, Jilin Province, China, and Greek, lestes, "hunter,"
a common name ending for basal mammals.
Species: jiliensis ZAN, WOOD, ROUGIER,
JIN, CHEN & SCHAFF, 2006
Etymology: Jiliensis, latinized verison of Jilin, after Jiiln Province, China,
where the specimens were collected.
Holotype: Jilin University Geological Museum no. Ya1.23.i
Locality: Northeast of Gongzhuling City, along the eastern margin of the Songliao Basin, Jilin Province, China.
Horizon: Quantou Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Early Late Cretaceous.
Material: Anterior portion of a left dentary containing i1-p3 plus roots of matrix impressions for at least 2 more teeth.
Referred material:
Jilin University Geological Museum no. Ya2.24.i: Posterior section of a right dentary broken anterior to p4, lacking most of the coronoid process, lacking all of the condyle and angle, but including broken remnants of p4, m2-3 and relatively complete p5-m1.
