Etymology: Chalawan, a gigantic crocodile in the epic story of the crocodile hutner Khrai Thong wirtten by King Rama II (1768-1824).

Species: thailandicus (BUFFETAUT & INGAVAT, 1980) MARTIN, LAUPRASERT, BUFFETAUT, LIARD & SUTEETHORN, 2014
Etymology: In reference to Thailand, where the specimen was found.

Holotype: CAS42-20 (formerly Department of Mineral Resources, Bangkok, No. TF 1370)

Locality: Road cutting, north-east of Amphoe Nong Bua Lam Phu, on the highway to Changwat Udon Thani, Nong Bua Lam Phu Province, North-eastern Thailand.

Horizon: Phu Kradung Formation, Khorat Group.
