Genus: Vegasaurus O’GORMAN, SALGADO, OLIVERO & MARENSSI, 2015
Etymology: In reference to Gega Island where the holotype was collected, and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: In honor of Juan Jose Moly, an outstanding Argentine paleontological technician, who has participated in 17 Antarctic field trips and participated in the colleciton of the holotype. Pronunciation: mo-li-i with the 'y' pronounced as 'i'.

Holotype: MLP 93-I-5-1

Locality: Cape Lamb, Vega Ilsnad, James Ross Archipelago, Antarctic Peninsula.

Horizon: Cape Lamb Member, Snow Hill Island Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Lower Maastrichtian Stage, Upper Senonian Subepoch, Late Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: A postcranial skeleton preserving a complete cervical region with 54 cervical vertebrae, 3 pectoral vertebrae, 17 dorsal vertebrae, 3 sacral vertebrae, anterior and medial caudal vertebrae, pectoral and pelvic girdles, forelimbs and hind limbs, ribs, and gastroliths.
