Etymolgoy: Caihong is from the Mandarin 'Caihong', rainbow, refrring to the beautiful preservation of the holotype specimen of the animal and the array of insights it offers into paravain evolution.

Etymology:
Mandarin, ju, "big", and Madarin, ji, "crest" referring to the animal's prominent lacrimal crest.

Locality: Gangou, Qinlong, northern Hebei Province, China.
Horizon: Tiaojishan Formation.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Oxfordian Stage, Lower Malm Epoch, Early Late Jurassic.
Material: Nearl complete articulated skeleton with associated integumentary structures preserved on a slab.
