Etymology: Latin, maio, "mother", and Latin, patagium, "skin membraine": in reference to the preerved patagial membrains of the fossil.

Species: urculiferum MENG, GROSSNICKLE, LIU, ZHANG, NEANDER, JI & LUO, 2017
Etymology: Latin, furcula, "fork" and Latin, ferum, "similar".

Holotype: BMNH PM002940a, b

Locality: Daxishan fossil site, Linglongta township, Jianchang County, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Tiaojishan Formation.

Biostragraphy:

Age: Bathonian Stage, Middle Dogger Epoch, Middle Jurassic.

Material: Nearly Complete skull, and skeleton. Note: Hair, skin and gliding membrane preserved.
