Etymology : Greek, sino + herpeton, meanign creeping animal from China.

Species: fengshanensis GAO & SHUBIN, 2001
Etymology: In reference to the type locality, Fengshan.

Holotype: GMV 1606

Locality: Fengshan, Hebei Province, China.

Horizon: Zhangjiakou Formation.
Note: Xiguayuan Formation of GAO, XU & CHENG, 1889


Age: Tithonian Stage, Upper Malm Epoch, Late Jurassic.

Material: An articulated skeleton including cranium and postcranium.

Referred material:

GMV 1607-1610: A large number of exquisietly preserved and fully metamorphosed salamandes.

GMV 1603 (part and counterpart), 1602: Juvenile specimens with impressions of external gills.

Unnumbered: Numerous topotypic specimens.
