Etymology:

Holotype: PULR 08 (old La Plata Museum No. 64-XI-14-11)

Locality: Southwest part of the Los Chanares locality, “2 km north of the mouth of Rio Chanares,” more accurately located 3 km north of the north branch of the Chanares River and 5 km southwest of the Puerta de Talampaya, about 2 km north of the mouth of Rio Chanares, Los Chanares type locality, near the mouth of Chanares River, Talampaya National Park, from the valley of the north fork of the Chanares River, about 5 miles east of the point where this stream debounces into the Talampaya plain, La Rioja Province, Argentina.

Horizon: Lower member of the Chanares Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Ladinian Stage, Upper Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: Skull much of the presacral column and scattered limb and girdle material.

Referred material:

MCZ 4116: A slab including a crushed skull and jaws and considerable postcranial material.

MCZ 4117: A nearly complete skull and jaws.

MCZ 4118: Ventral elements of the skull, the jaws and a partial postcranial skeleton.

PVL 4597 (the 'Tucuman specimen' of Romer, 1972, Bonaparte, 1975a): Nearly complete skull and mandible in articulation, an almost complete presacral vertebral series with articulated paramedian dorsla osteoderms, 2 saral vertebrea, an incomlete caudal vertebral series, both ilia, left pubis, both ischia, an almost complete left hind limb, fragmentary right hind limb, and several undetermined fragments of bone.

PVL 4612: Nearly complete skull, articulated with the left mandibular ramus, exposing the palate.

Locality: Campo de Cordoba locality, La Rioja Province, Argentina.

Horizon: Lower member of the Chanares Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Ladinian Stage, Upper Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material:

CRILAR PV 480: 1 and a half incomplete cervical centra articualted with each other and with two incomplete ribs, a series of three incomplete vertebrae articualted with one rib, dorsally in contact with the left row of the paramedian osteoderms, and posteriorly 4 ribs with no articulating vertebrae but in antomial position, a series of 6 incomplete cervicodorsal vertebrae with some of their ribs preserved and half of a centrum attached posteriorly, and moulds of 2 short fragments of paramedian osteoderms.

Note: Found in association with a scapulocoracoid adn an osteroderm series of a proterochammpid archosauriform.

Horizon: Chanares Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Massetognathus-Chanaresuchus AZ.

Age: Ladinian Stage, Upper Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material:

CRILAR PV 490: 2 articulated cervical vertebra in contact wth a short paramedian osteoderm series, 1 isolated dorsal vertebrae, left humerus, right ulna, right radius, left femur and six histological sectios of teh femoral diaphysis and osteoderms.

 

Note: LUCAS, & HARRIS, 1996 have this genus as an Erpetosuchian.
