Etymology:

Holotype: NHMUK PV R6792

Locality: Locality B5 of Stockley (1932), (Field locality U11/2), west of Irundi, Ruhuhu valley, southwestern Tanzania, Tanganyika, East Africa.

Horizon: Liufa Member, Manda Formation.

Note: Correlated with subzone C of the Cynognathus Assemblage Zone of the Beaufort Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Latest Anisian Stage, Lower Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: Partial skeleton representing a single individual, including partial left and right maxillae, right dentary fragment 33 vertebrae (including cervicals, dorsals, 1 sacral, and caudals), fragments of dorsal and caudal neural spines, a partial dorsal rib, both scapulae and part of the left coracoid, incomplete right humerus, both pelves, both femora, both tibiae, partial right fibula, a fragmentary metapodal, 3 osteoderms in situ on neural spine of cervical 6, and several osteoderm fragments. Part of this specimen (fragments including dorsal and caudal neural spines, partial dorsal centrum, fragmentary metapodial) was previously catalogued as UMZC T1117.

NHMUK PV R6793 (Field number 11, BMNH R16401 of Thomas, 2004): A partial skeleton apparently representing a single individual, including a fragment of a right maxilla with a partially erupted tooth crown, cervical (Ce) vertebrae Ce2-8, dorsal (D) vertebrae D1-5, 2 additional dorsal centra, 1 caudal centrum, neural arch and spine fragments, left and right scapulae, partial right coracocid, left and right humeri, left ulna, proximal and disal fragments of a radius, 5 complete osteoderms, and several osteoderm fragments.

NHMUK PV R36950: Casts of a left astragalus and calcaneum, possibley representing those originally belonging to the holotype indivdual.

NHMUK PV R6794: A partial skeleton apparently representing a single individual, including the odontoid, axial intercentrum, axis, Ce3-8, parts of 8 dorsal vertebrae (identified as D1 and D4-10 by Charig [1956]), 12 caudal vertebrae, (6 anterior caudals and 6 distal caudals), rib fragments, left pelvis, partial right femur, left tibia, proximal right fibula, left calcaneum (now lost), and several fragments of osteoderms.
