Genus: Pinheirochampsa PAES-NETO, LACERDA, EZCURRA, RAUGUST, TROTTEYN, SOARES, SCHULTZ, PRETTO, FRANCISCHINI & MARTINELLI, 2023
Etymology: In reference to the Pinheiro District, located about 15 km south of Candelaria city, Candelaria Municipality, Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, where the Sanga Pinheiro outcorps are placed in which the fossils were found and Greek, champsi, "crocodile."

Etymology: In honor of Carlos Nunes Rodrigues a friend and colleague, who has significantly contributed to the research of fossil vertebrates in the Candelaria region and the Triassic of Brazil as a whole, by discovering important new specimens and outcrops and establishing an important local public museum, the Museu Municipal Aristides Carlos Rodrigues, in which he is the curator and where the fossils are properly housed, curated and made available for study.

Holotype: UFRGS-PV-04640-T

Locality: Sanga Pinheiro site (also known as Sanga Carlos and Fossil's Sanga), 52°46'26.76"W, 29°45'55.88"S, Pinheiro District, around 15 km south of the municipality of Candelaria, Rio Grande so Sul State, South Brazil.

Horizon: Pinheiros-Chiniqua Sequence.

Biostratigraphy: Dinodontosaurus Assemblage Zone.

Age: Latest Ladianian Stage, Upper Mid Triassic Epoch-Early Carnian Stage, Lower Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Almost complete skull and loer jaw.

UFRGS-PV-0065-T: A partial skull lacking teh anterior portion of the rostrum.

UFRGS-PV-0465-T: A partial skull with antorbital region.
