Etymology: In reference to Rio Arriba County, New Mexico, where the type locality is situated, and Greek, souchos, 'crocodile', a common suffix in the generic names of aetosaurs.

Etymology: Greek, helios, "sun" and Greek, acanthus, "spine"; Referes to spikes rising from the posterior paramedian armour and also honors the state of New Mexico, from which the holotype was collected, whos state emblem is a 'spiky' sun (Zia Pueblo Symbol).
