Genus: Haopterus WANG & LU, 2001
Etymology: In reference to Prof. Yichun Hao, a distinguishce Chinese paleontologist who has contributed significantly to the study of the Jehol Biota, and Greek, pterus, "wing."

Species: gracilis WANG & LU, 2001
Etymology: Latin, gracilis, "slender." The species name reflects both the beautiful preservation and the tiny metatarsals of the holotype.

Holotype: IVPP V 11726

Locality: Locality 1 at Sihetun, Shangyuan, Beipiao, western Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Jiangshangou Member, Yixian Formation, Jehol Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Barremain Stage, Lower Gallic Subepoch, Lower Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: A nearly complete skeleton that contains a complete skull and pectral girdle, forelmbs, sternum, cervical, dorsal and metatarsals and digits.
