Etymology: Hatzeg in reference to the Hateg Basin of Transylvania, where the type specimen was collected, and Greek, pteros, "wing."

Species: thambema BUFFETAUT, GRIGORGESCU & CSIKI, 2002
Etymology: Greek, thambema, "monster," alluding to the monstrous size of this pterosaur.

Holotype: FGGUB R1083

Locality: Valioara, northwestern Hateg Basin, Transylvania, Bihor County, Romania.

Horizon: Densus-Ciula Formation, Chocolate-coloured siltstones.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Maastrichtian Stage, Uppermost Senonian Subepoch, Uppermost Gulf Epoch, Latest Cretaceous.

Material: Occiput, right suspensorium, incomplete left humerus, and unidentified bone fragments from a single individual.
