Genus: Hongshanopterus WANG, CAMPOS, ZHOU & KELLNER, 2008
Etymology: The generic name is derived from the Hongshan culture whose archaeological
sites are mainly found in western Liaoning Province and in neighboring southeastern
Inner Mongolia, and Greek, pterus, "wing."
Species: lacustris WANG, CAMPOS, ZHOU & KELLNER, 2008
Etymology: Latin, lacustris, "lacustrine"; in reference to the depositional
environment of some layers of the Jiufotang Formation.
Holotype: IVPP V14582
Locality: Dapingfang, Chaoyang County, western Liaoning Province, China.
Horizon: Jiufotang Formation, Jehol Group.
Biostratigraphy:
Age: Aptain Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.
Material: Skull, atlas, axis and three cervical vertebrae.
