Etymology: In reference to Liaoning, and Greek, pterus, 'wing'.

Etymology: In honor of Prof. Zhiwei Gu, a distinguished Chinese invertebrate paleontologist, for his pioneering contribution to the study of the Jehol Biota.

Holotype: IVPP V13291

Locality: Xiaoyugou, Lianhe, Chaoyang County, Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Jiufotang Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptian Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: An incomplete skull including premaxilla, maxilla, jugal, quadrate, lower jaw, most teeth and some postcranial bones such as cervicals and wing digit bones.
