Genus: Nipponopterus ZHOU, IKEGAMI, PEGAS, YOUSHINAGA, SATO, MUKUNOKI, OTANI & KOBAYSHI, 2025
Etymology: Nippon, refering to Japan and Greek, pteron, "wing", a common suffix for pterosaurs.

Species: mifunensis ZHOU, IKEGAMI, PEGAS, YOUSHINAGA, SATO, MUKUNOKI, OTANI & KOBAYSHI, 2025
Etymology: In reference to both the Mifune Group and Mifune Town, where the type-specimen originates.

Holotype: MDM 349

Locality: From an outcrop near Amagimi dam, Mifune Town, Kamimashikigun, Kumamoto Prefecture, Mifune District, Kyushu Island, Japan.

Horizon: “Upper: Formation”, Mifune Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Turonian-Coniacian Stage, Upper Gallic Subepoch, Lower Gulf Epoch, Late Middle to Early Late Cretaceous.

Material: Incomplete 6th cervical vertebra.
