Genus: Preondactylus WILD, 1984
Etymology: Preon (Italian), after the locality in the valley of Preone in Friuli, Northern Italy (also called Val Preon); and Greek, dactylus, "finger"; regarding the elongated wing-finger, which supports the wing-membrane.

Species: buffarinii WILD, 1984
Etymology: In honor of the finder of this specimen, Mr. Nando Buffarini, Udine.

Holotype: 1770 MFSN

Locality: About 200 meters south of the small village of Madonna Peraries in the valley of Preone at the Northeast-slope of the Monte Pezzeit, Friuli, Udine Province, Italy.

Horizon: Lower middle part of the Dolomia Principal, Dolomia di Forni Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Probably Middle Norian Stage, Upper Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Most of skull and dentary, 8 cervicals, 14 dorsals, 4 sacrals and 11 caudals perhaps as many as 20 caudal vertebrae, scapula and coracoid, humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, phalanges, metacarpals, pelvis, femur, ulna, radius, metatarsals, phalanges, ribs.
