Genus: Santanadactylus BUISONJE, 1980
Etymology: In reference to the Santana Formation, and Greek, dactylus, “finger”: Santana Finger.

Etymology: In reference to the country in which it was found, Brazil.

Holotype: GIUA M. 4894

Locality: Exact locality is not known, the provenance of the calcareous concretion which contained the holotype can be given, North-eastern exposure in the foothills of the Chapada do Araripe, Ceara State, north-eastern Brazil.

Horizon: Lower part of the Santana-Formation, Araripe Group.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Aptian Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Proximal part of right humerus together with the ankylosed glenoidal parts of the right scapula-coracoid.

Paratype: GIUA M 4895 (Cast MN 4737-V): 2 cervical vertebrae.

Etymology: In honor of Llewellyn Ivor Price (1905-1980), for his pioneer work on the pterosaurs from the Santana Formation of Chapada do Araripe.

Material: Left ulna, left radius, distal left carpal, left metacarpal IV and 1st left wing phalanx.

MZ A/III 522: 2 proximal phalanges of left wing finger.

Referred material:

AMNH 22552: Almost complete right wing including humerus, radius, 3 carpals, 1st and 2nd metacarpal, 3rd metacarpal, 4th metacarpal, the wing metacarpal, the pteroid bone, several phalanges of digits, I, II, and III, 3 phalanges of the wing finger, the proximal fragment of the 4th wing finger phalanx.

A cast of the type is at the Museu Nacional (MN 4738-V, Rio de Janeiro)

Etymology: In honor of the Bavarian Zoologist Johann Baptist von Spix (1781-1826), together with Carl Friedrich Philipp von Martius in the years 1817-1820) who discovered the fossil layers of Chapada do Araripe.
