Etymology: Shenzhou, an old name for China and Greek, pterus, "wing."

Species: chaoyangensis LU, UNWIN, XU & ZHANG, 2008
Etymology: in reference to the Chinese administrative unit Chaoyang, Liaoning Province, north-eastern China, where the holotype was found.

Holotype: HGM 41HIII-305A

Locality: Chaoyang, Liaoning Province, north-eastern China.

Horizon: Jiufotang Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Early Aptian Stage, Middle Gallic Subepoch, Upper Early Cretaceous Epoch, Early Cretaceous.

Material: Skull and nearly complete skeleton.
