Wanamara Country encompasses the headwaters of the Flinders River east to Richmond, south to Kynuna, west to the Williams River near Cloncurry and north to Cambridge Downs and Dalgonally (Breen, 1981). The generic name incorporates thapun [ta-boon] and ngaka [nga-ga], the Wanamara words for 'spear' and 'mouth', respectively.
