Genus: Wukongopterus WANG, KELLNER, JIANG & MENG, 2009
Etymology: In honor of Sun Wukong (the Monkey King), one of the most famous and beloved fictional characters of the classical Chinese literature "Journey to the West", and Greek, pterus, "wing."

Etymology: In honor ow Yutong Li, senior preparator of the IVPP in recognition of the excellent work preparing this and many other Chinese Fossils.

Holotype: IVPP V15113

Locality: Linglongta, Jianchang, western Liaoning Province, China.

Horizon: Daohugou Bed (Formation).

Biostratigraphy:

Age: ?Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous.

Material: Almost complete skeleton, lacking the occipital region of the skull roof.
