Etymology: In reference to Yumen, the city where the holtoype specimen was collected, and Greek, herpeton, "crawling."

Etymology: In honor of the late eminent Chinese Vertebrate Paleontologist Yang Zhong-jian.

Holotype: GS-DSK-017

Locality: Dashankou, Yumen City, western Gansu Province, northwestern China.

Horizon: Upper Member, Xidagou Formation.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Middle Permian.

Material: Nearly complete sacral vertebrae and dermal scute.

Referred material:

GS-DSK-017: 2 articulated dorsal vertebrae with dermal scutes.
