Etymology: Genus name for Avalon, an island from the legend of King Arthur,
often identified with Glastonbury, near Street, England and Greek, nectes, "swimmer."

Etymology: In honor of Arthur Cruickshank (1932-2011), who with M. A. Taylor
initated the restudy of British Lower Jurassic plesiosaurians in the 1990s,
and also as a reference to the lengendary Arthur of British folklore.
