Etymology: The generic name is derived from "Diandong", meaning the
eastern
Yunnan Province, China, where the fossil site is located, and Greek, sauros,"lizard."

Etymology: Latin, acutidens, "teeth"; in reference to sharp teeth.
Holotype: IVPP V 17761
Locality: Da'aozi Village, Luoping County, Yunnan Province, China.
Horizon: Upper Member, Guanling Formation.
Biostratigraphy: Nicoraella kockeli conodon zone.
Age: Middle Anisian Stage, Lower Mid Triassic, Lower Middle Triassic.
Material: Skull and skeleton.
