Genus: Kaiwhekea CRUICKSHANK & FORDYCE, 2002
Etymology: From the Maori names kai, meaning food, and whekea, meaning squid; thus, squid-eater.

Species: katiki CRUICKSHANK & FORDYCE, 2002
Etymology: In reference to Katiki Beach, which lies immediately to the north of Shag Point.

Holotype: OU 12649

Locality: Shore platform at Shag Point, north of the Shag River mouth, North Otago, New Zealand Topographical Map Series NZMS 260, sheet J43; 397248, or about 45°28’S, 170°49’E, South Island, New Zealand.

Horizon: Lower to Middle Katiki Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Dimitobelus hectori zone.

Age: Haumurian Stage, close to the boundary between Upper and Lower Maastrichtian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.

Material: Skull and nearly complete skeleton.
