Etymology: Latin, Luso, 'Portuguese', and Greek, nectes, 'swimmer'.

Species: sauvagei SMITH, ARAUJO & MATEUS, 2012
Etymology: In honor of the 19th century palaeontologist Henri Emile Sauvage (1842-1917) who made significant contributions towards vertebrate palaeontology in Portugal, and first described MG33 (Sauvge 1897-1898).

Holotype: MG33

Locality: 1500 m WNW of Alhadas, Near Murtede, 40°11'N, 8°47'W, Coimbra District, Portugal.

Horizon: Sao Giao Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Dactylioceras polymorphum Ammonite biozone-Hammatoceras speciosum Ammonite biozone.

Age: Lower-Upper Toarcian Stage, Upper Lias Epoch, Late Early Jurassic.

Material: Partial skull and articulated mandible.
