Etymology: Latin, mare, “sea" and Greek, sauros, “lizard”: Sea lizard.

Etymology: Dedicated to the brothers Sergio and Rafael Cocca, members of the Museo Prof. Olscher of Zapala, and valuable collaborators in all the field work related to the search for marine reptiles in the Neuquen basin.

Locality: Chacalco sur, 39°15’S, 70°18’W, 70 km south-west of Zapala, Neuquen Province, Patagonia, Argentina.

Horizon: Los Molles Formation, Cuyo Group.

Biostratigraphy: Emileia giebeli, Emileia multiformes subzone.

Age: Lower Bajocian, Lower Middle Dogger Epoch, Late Middle Jurassic.

Material: Fragmentary articulated skull and mandible, fused atlas and axis, and the first cervical vertebrae.
