Etymology: In honor of the Grand Staircase-Esclante National Monument, Latin, scala, "staircase." and Latin, magnus, "grand."

Etymology: In reference to the Tropic Shale, Tournian, Early Late Cretaceous, the formation from which this specimen and many other notable plesiosaur specimens have been discovered.

Locality: MNA locality 1627, Glen Canyon National Recreation area, near the border with Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Kane County, Utah.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Lower Turonian Stage, upper Gallic subepoch, lower Gulf Epoch, Early Late Cretaceous.

Material: Complete skull, nearly complete dentition, and incomplete set of vertebrae and scapulae, coracoids, ilia, ichia, pubes, nearly complete forelimbs and hindlinbs.

Note: 289 gastroliths.

Note found with Scapanorhynchus raphiodon tooth, and may have scavenged the carcass (ALBRIGHT, GILLETTE & TITUS, 2013).
