Etymology: Latin, spectare, "to see"; in reference to the unique orbital morphology and visual adaptations of this species.

Horizon: Sharon Springs Formation, Pierre Shale.
Biostratigraphy: Baculites obtusus zone.
Age: Middle Campanian Stage, Senonian Subepoch, Upper Gulf Epoch, Late Cretaceous.
Material: Cranium and mandible, dorsal series, ribs, portions of the pelvic and pectoral girdles, both ilia, both fore-paddles and both hind-paddles.
