Genus: Yunguisaurus CHENG, SATO, WU & LI, 2006
Etymology: "Yungui" for the Yungui Gaoyuan (in Chinese pingying), a regional plateau named after the Yunnan and Guizhou provinces. The holotype locality is on this plateau, near the boundary between these two provinces; and Greek, sauros, "lizard."

Etymology: In honor of Professor Jinling Li of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology, China, for her leadership and contribution to the recent study of the Chinese Triassic marine vertebrate fauna.

Holotype: NMNS 004529/F003862

Locality: Near Huangnihe River, Chajiang, about 10 km NW of Xingyi, Guizhou Province, China.

Horizon: Falang Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Paragondolella naantangensis-P. polygnathifromis assemblage zone.

Age: Carnian Stage, Lower Late Triassic Epoch, Early Late Triassic.

Material: Nearly complete and articulated skeleton missing the distal tail.
