Genus: Lanceirosphenodon de VIVAR, MARTINELLI, HSIOU & SOARES, 2020
Etymology: Portuguese, lanceiros, "spear" in reference to the shape of the last additional teeth that are reminiscent of a spearhead and in recognition of the 'Lancerios Negros' (Black Lancers), a group formed by slaves armed with long spears, who fought for freedom during the Farrouilha Revolution in Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil (1835-1845), whose massacre brought about the end of the war + Sphenodon.

Etymology: In honor of Dr Jorge Ferigolo, a renouned Brazilian palaeontologist based at the Museu de Ciencias Naturais of the Fundacao Zoobotancia do Rio Grande do Sul (MCN/FZBRS, Porto Alegre, Brazil), who headed the Brazilian Pro-Guaiba Project, in which several localities and new fossils from the Triassic of the Rio Grande do Sul State where discovered, including the first rhynchocephalian materials.

Locality: Linha Sao Luiz outcrop, north of Faxinal do Soturno city, 29°33'45"S, 53°26'48"W, Rio Grande do Sul State, Southern Brazil.

Horizon: Top of the Candelaria Sequence, Santa Maria Supersequence.

Biostratigraphy: Riograndia AZ.

Age: Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Left dentary missing the posterior part wiht an almost complete dentition.
