Etymology: In honor of Diego Abelin, technician of the Instituto y Museo de Ciencias Naturales of the Universidad Nacional de San Juan and discoverer of the type specimen; and Latin, Canis, 'dog'.

Species: elegans MARTINEZ, FERNANDEZ & ALCOBER, 2013
Etymology: Latin, elegans, "elegant"; referes to the sleek look of the snout of the holotype.

Holotype: PVSJ 881

Locality: Cancha de Bochas, Hoyada de Ischigualasto, Ischigualasto Provincial Park, San Juan Province, Argentina.

Horizon: 92 m above the base of the Ischigualasto Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Middle Scaphonyx-Exaeretodon-Herrerasaurus biozone.

Age: Carnian-Norian Stage, Late Triassic Epoch, Late Triassic.

Material: Partial skull, represented by the snout and th eorbital region, with patially preserved upper dentition.
