Genus: Ictidosuchus BROOM, 1900
Etymology: Greek, iktid- (iktis), “ferret” and Greek, soukos, “crocodile”: Ferret crocodile.

Etymology:
Note: Originally spelled Ictidosuchus primævus. The ICZN Article 27, the spelling separated “æ”.

Holotype: AMNH 5529

Locality: 10 miles NE of Pearston, Cape Colony, South Africa.

Horizon: Hoedemaker member, Middle Teekloof Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Tropidostoma zone (Tropidostoma-Endothidon Assemblage zone KEYSER, 1979, SACS, 1980, Tropidostoma microtrema zone KEYSER & SMITH, 1977-78, Lower Cistecephalus zone KITCHING, 1970, 1977, Endothiodon zone, WATSON, 1914).

Age: Tatarian Age, Lopingian Subepoch, Zechstein Epoch, Late Permian.

Material: Fragmentary skull, left scapula, coracoid, and precoracoid, humeri, tibia.

Skull after Broom, 1902; 1), Upper side of skull of Ictidosuchus primaevus; 2) side view of skull and lower jaw. The fragment of the maxilla with the canine tooth is in true apposition. The squamosal is restored from that of the right side. The upper molars are somewhat crushed together.
