Etymology:  Manda, for the Manda Beds, Ansian Stage, Early Mid Triassic Epoch, Early Middle Traissic, from which the material was collected, Greek, gomphios, "molar" and Greek, odon, "tooth": gomphodon is a commonly used suffix in generic names of gomphodont cynodonts.

Etymology:

Locality: Locality U12 of the British Museum (Natural History)-University of London Joint Palaeontological Expedition of 1963, between the Hiasi and Njalila streams, just south of the Rutukira River, Ruhuhu Valley, southwest Tanzania.

Horizon: Lifua Member of Manda Beds.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Anisian Stage, Lower Mid Triassic Epoch, Early Middle Triassic.

Material: Anterior half of skull, most of right dentary and dentigerous portion of left dentary, right jugal, and partial braincase with attached right zygomatic arch.

Referred material:

NHMUK PV R11974: Partial palate including primary and secondary palate and left pterygoid flange.

Locality: Locality U2 of the BM(NH)-University of London Joint Palaeontological Expedition, 1963, Ruhuhu Valley, S.W. Tanzania.

Horizon: Lifua Member of Manda Beds.

Biostratigraphy:

Age: Late Anisian Stage/Early Ladinian Stage, Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: A well preserved snouth with complete upper dentition of a young individual.

Referred material:

Holotype: CAMZM 922 (Ruhuhu Field number 136)

Locality: Locality B26 of Stockley (1932), Gingama south of Ruhuhu River, Ruhuhu Valley, Tanzania.

Horizon: Lifua Member of Manda Beds.

Age: Late Anisian Stage/Early Ladinian Stage, Mid Triassic Epoch, Middle Triassic.

Material: Partial left maxilla with 2 postcanines of an adult individual.
