Etymology: Greek, micro-, "small," and whaitsia,in reference to the whaitsiid affinities.

Species: mendrezi HUTTENLOCKER & SMITH, 2017
Etymology: In honor of Leonid Tatarinov for his contributions to whaitsoid systematics and therocephalian funcitonal anatomy.

Holotype: SMA-PK-K10990

Locality: Badshock, De Hoop 117, near Beaufort West, Western Cape Province, South Africa.

Horizon: Hoedemaker Member, Teekloof Formation.

Biostratigraphy: Tropidostoma Zone.

Age: Lower Wuchiapingian Stage, Lopingian Epoch, Late Permian.

Material: Partial skull with dentaries preserved inocclusion, missing most of the braincase, occiput, and postdentary bones.

Referred material:

SAM-PK-K10984: Weathered snout preserving most of the left antorbital region, palate, and maxillary canine and postcanine alveoli.
